For love's sake only...

Okay, so I know we're completely in that stage in a relationship where everything is a happy shade of rose, but I like to think I have earned the right to enjoy every minute of being "in love" since I've waited so long for it! All I can say is that I'm constantly amazed with how thoughtful Tarjei is, and how devoted he is to 'us!'

A poem that Tarjei shared a couple of months ago has been on my mind a lot lately. It has become a poem that means a lot to both of us. I think it really depicts what love can become over time, when we love for love's sake only! Here's a little something to "chew" on....

If thou must love me, let it be for nought
Except for love's sake only. Do not say
'I love her for her smile--her look--her way
Of speaking gently,--for a trick of thought
That falls in well with mine, and certes brought
A sense of pleasant ease on such a day'--
For these things in themselves, Beloved, may
Be changed, or change for thee,--and love, so wrought,
May be unwrought so. Neither love me for
Thine own dear pity's wiping my cheeks dry,

--A creature might forget to weep, who bore
Thy comfort long, and lose thy love thereby!
But love me for love's sake, that evermore
Thou mayst love on, through love's eternity.

.....If Thou Must Love Me, Let it Be for Nought by Elizabeth Barrett Browning

  2. No one writes poetry today quite like Elizabeth Barrett Browning did! Definitely a poem from the heart with beautifully crafted words and phrases that will take several sit-downs and mighty "chewing" for me. Wouldn't you know it, I couldn't even find the word certes, to verify what I thought it meant, with a first look at an online dictionary nor in my Webster's hardcopy. But, alas, online search did come through - Yay!

  3. Love for love's sake is the closest thing to God's love....and a gift. When the colors of life change from rose to something else, there still can be love for love's sake. Hugs, Elaine
